About
About TranscribeCat.
TranscribeCat turns audio and video into accurate transcripts, billed per hour of audio at $2.00 per hour. No subscription. No expiring credits. No tiers.
What it does
Upload an audio or video file. Pay $2.00 per hour. Get an editable transcript with speaker labels in minutes. Download it as TXT, SRT, VTT or DOCX.
The language of a file is detected automatically, at the same price whatever it is. The minimum charge is $2.00 per file — a 15-minute file and a 55-minute file both cost $2.00.
How it works
Every file runs through a speech recognition model that reaches near-human accuracy on clean audio. Speaker labels are produced by automatic diarization on top of that transcript.
The service is built with Next.js, deployed on Vercel, payments by Stripe. Files are processed in isolated cloud workers. Audio is retained 90 days from your last sign-in by default; you choose the period on each upload, and that choice becomes your default for the next one.
Why pay per hour, not per month
Most transcription services charge $10-25/month, or $20+ per seat per month for teams. That math works if you (or every member of your team) transcribes every day. Most people do not. Students need transcripts during exam season. Podcasters need them after recording. Researchers need them during fieldwork. The rest of the time, a subscription — or a roomful of unused seats — is money wasted.
At $2.00 per hour, a full semester of lecture transcription costs less than a single month of most subscriptions. See pricing for the full breakdown.
Who makes it
TranscribeCat is built by Klarweb, a small software studio in Oslo, Norway. The main developer is Axel Jørgensen.
The idea came from helping a friend transcribe a few hours of audio. Every tool we tried locked the basic feature behind a monthly subscription or charged for credit packs that expired. For someone who needs transcription a handful of times a year, that did not make sense. So we built the version we wanted to use.

Privacy
You choose how long audio is kept — from instant deletion to 90 days, which is also the default. We do not use recordings to train AI models and we do not sell your data. Only the text transcript is kept in your account by default, and you can delete it at any time.
Analytics is PostHog, hosted in the EU, and it only loads if you accept the cookie banner. Decline and nothing analytics-related runs at all. See the privacy policy for full details.
If a transcription fails
You are not charged. We place a hold on your card when you upload and only take the money once your transcript is ready — so if it never arrives, the hold is simply cancelled and nothing leaves your account. There is no refund to wait for because no money moved, and no support ticket to file.
